CURRICULUM PLANS 2018-19

We’re almost halfway through the school year but I still wanted to share what my curriculum plans look like. I keep changing it each year but I’m starting to feel satisfied with the flow of it. Here is what I’ve planned for this year. I am using the SOMOS curriculum from Martina Bex as my foundation. Along with that, I’ve also been incorporating Señor Wooly and some novels.

All students in 5th and 6th grade have specials on a rotation. They have me for 6-7 weeks and then they move onto their next special.

5th Grade (6-7 weeks)

  • Calendar talk (start of class each day)
    • Content: numbers 1-30, days of the week, months, today/tomorrow/yesterday, birthdays, events, weather, how you’re feeling
  • SOMOS unit 1
    • Structures: hay, dice, se llama, le gusta, este, esta
    • Song: los pollitos dicen
    • Movie talk: Wildebeest
  • SOMOS unit 2
    • Strucutres: camina, corre, ve
    • Song: Corre by Jesse y Joy
    • El encierro de toros
    • Movie talk: El mejor de la clase

6th Grade (6-7 weeks)

  • Calendar and card talk (start of class each day)
    • Content: numbers 1-30, days of the week, months, today/tomorrow/yesterday, birthdays, events, weather, how you’re feeling
    • Likes and dislikes (card talk)
  • SOMOS unit 3
    • Structures: cierra, abre, son las ocho
    • Song: Cierra la puerta by Alex Zurdo
    • Intro some subject pronouns and verb patterns
    • Movie talk: Destiny / Closet Space
  • Señor Wooly unit: No lo tengo
    • Structures: tiene, tengo, necesita, necesito
    • School classes and supplies

 In 7th and 8th grade, students get to choose their specials for the first time. I offer four courses and they have to take them in order. Most students take a semester in 7th and a semester in 8th grade.

Spanish 1 (1 quarter)

  • Review structures from SOMOS units 1-3 by incorporating them into stories
  • SOMOS unit 4
    • Structures: quiere ser, toma, habla
    • Song: Quiero ser by Kiubbah Malon
    • Schools around the world
    • Movie talk: Pip (canine university)
  • The rainforest and animals that live there
    • Pre-teaching vocabulary: patas palmeadas, nada bien, puede nadar, salta, choca con, le escupe, plantas, árboles, agua, lago, la selva tropical, botas
    • Mini unit on capybaras
  • Novel: El capibara con botas by Mira Canion
    • 2-3 weeks (whole class novel)

Spanish 2 (1 quarter)

  • SOMOS unit 5
    • Structures: tiene, va a, está enojado
    • Martina Bex’s plans: subject pronouns and Felipe IV (“de” for possession)
    • Family and pets
    • Using “ir +a” / forms of “ir”
    • Movie talks options:
      • The Present
      • Hola Llamigo
      • Neighbors
  • SOMOS unit 6
    • Structures: le grita, se sienta, se levanta
    • Additional reflexive structures
    • Pre-teaching vocab: se despierta, se duerme, recoge, lleva
    • Movie talk options:
      • Mr. Bean
      • Closet Space
  • Novel: Brandon Brown quiere un perro
  • Mini birthday unit (create paper bag piñatas – last 2 days)

Spanish 3 (1 quarter)

  • Start FVR (free voluntary reading) every Tuesday and Thursday; students have read 2 class novels at this point and are now ready for independent FVR time
  • Martina Bex resource: “La criatura” reading
    • review past structures and introduce the nosotros form
  • Sr. Wooly mini unit: Guapo
  • SOMOS unit 7
    • Structures: puede, hace, le ayuda, tiene que
    • Song options: No te puedo olvidar by Nicky Jam / La Cintura by Álvaro Soler
    • “Álvaro no puede bailar” – mini story unit by Kara Jacobs
    • Los quehaceres song by Sr. Wooly
    • Los castells de Tarragona
    • Movie talks options:
      • Fritz the dog
      • Cuerdas
      • Mr. Indifferent
      • Rock, Paper, Scissors
      • Erste Christmas Ad
  • SOMOS unit 8
    • Structures: sabe, encuentra, busca
    • Song options: Fotografía by Juanes and Nelly Furtado / Ando Buscando by Carlos Baute
    • Movie talk: Lost Property
    • “Te Amo” mini song unit
    • La comida latina readings
    • Cooking day in class

Spanish 4 (1 quarter)

  • Continue FVR (free voluntary reading) every Tuesday and Thursday; students have read 2 class novels at this point and can handle independent FVR time
  • SOMOS unit 9
    • Structures: tiene miedo de, hacia, mira
    • “tener” expressions
    • El cucuy and other legends/myths
    • El silbón de Venezuela reading (working on “ir” forms)
    • Martina Bex resource: Spanish TV programming
  • SOMOS unit 10
    • Structures: tiene hambre, come, está triste, llora
    • Additional Martina Bex resources: La rana de boca, lágrimas del cocodrilo, Gazpacho reading and recipe
  • If there is time at the end of the year:
    • Día de los muertos lesson plans from Martina Bex
    • Novel: Tumba by Mira Canion
